Umm, well... setelah di film Oscar sebelumnya, The English Patient, istri Colin Firth diselingkuhi oleh Ralph Fiennes, kali ini di film Oscar yang satu ini, calon istri Colin Firth diserobot oleh Joseph Fiennes. Dua kosong buat Fiennes bersaudara :P
Tapi berbeda dengan karakter Geoffrey Clifton di TEP yang lebih sebagai pelengkap penderita, kali ini karakter yang diperankan Colin Firth di SIL ini jelas-jelas ditahbiskan sebagai pihak antagonis, seperti dituliskan oleh Marc Norman dan Tom Stoppard dalam naskah mereka ketika memperkenalkan kemunculannya pertama kali bersamaan dengan karakter Viola-nya Gwuneth Paltrow:
Now we meet VIOLA. VIOLA DE LESSEPS is twenty five and beautiful, and she is laughing with great natural enjoyment. She sits slightly apart from her small family group--her parents, SIR ROBERT DE LESSEPS and LADY MARGARET DE LESSEPS. Part of the group but seated behind as befits her lower status is VIOLA'S NURSE.
Elsewhere is LORD WESSEX, our villain. Wessex is in his forties, dark cruel, self-important. He has notices VIOLA. The nurse notices him.Karakter Lord Wessex adalah tipikal bangsawan berdompet cekak yang butuh pengantin dari keluarga kaya. Ia menginginkan Viola sebagai istri murni karena faktor uang, bukan personal.
Wessex: Is she fertile?
Sir Robert: She will breed. If she do not, send her back.
Wessex: Is she obedient?
Sir Robert: She is as stubborn as 'any mule in Christendom--but if you are the man to ride her, there are rubies in the saddlebag.
Wessex: I like her.Ketimbang merasa simpati seperti yang bisa kita rasakan pada karakter Geoffrey Clifton di SEP, kita murni diajak untuk membenci Lord of Wessex. Apalagi pada akhirnya ia berhasil memboyong Viola ke Amerika, tak peduli gadis itu masih mencintai Shakespeare atau tidak.
Tapi bagi Colin Firth, ia selalu menemukan cara untuk dapat bersimpati pada karakter ini, seperti yang dilakukannya pada semua karakter yang diperankannya. Baginya, keinginan Lord of Wessex untuk melakukan perjalanan ke dunia baru, menunjukkan keberaniannya untuk mencoba hal-hal yang baru, dan berpetualang.
"His crime is that he is unintelligent and has no sense of humour, but for his times, at least he hadn't used his power to kill anyone, unlike many men in his position, and as fot going off to the Carolinas, that was not exactly a quick trip on Concorde in those days."
Dan, karakter antagonis atau bukan, gelar Lord of Wessex dipilih oleh Prince Edward ketika menikahi tunangannya Sophie Rhys-Jones, yang konon terinspirasi setelah menonton SIL.
By the way, Colin Firth juga pernah memerankan William Shakespeare, kok, di film TV Blackadder: Goes and Forth.
Meskipun Shakespeare-nya di sini jadi korban pukulan dan tendangan Rowan Atkinson, gara-gara di masa depan ia membuat banyak murid sekolah yang menderita karena harus mempelajari karya-karyanya, dan banyak aktor yang terpaksa bercelana ketat untuk memerankan karakter-karakter ciptaannya :P
