Dari penampakannya, buku dengan kertas yang sudah menguning ini sudah jelas kelihatan jadulnya. Tapi aku kalo beli buku memang random sih, asal bisa menimbulkan perasaan "sepertinya menarik" bisa jadi langsung kucomot dan masuk keranjang belanja. Buku yang usianya ternyata sudah 36 tahun ini menjadi saksi dan bukti.

Seperti yang terpampang dengan huruf besar-besar di cover depan, buku ini merupakan kumpulan kisah kegagalan epik, atau anggap saja masih epik, karena setelah lewat 36 tahun, pasti sudah banyak kegagalan yang lebih spektakuler ketimbang yang tercantum dalam buku ini. Salut buat penulisnya yang rajin mengumpulkan kisah-kisah ini dari seluruh dunia di zaman belum ada internet. Kalau sekarang sih, untuk tahu cerita-cerita macam begini (lengkap dengan foto dan video segala malah), kita bisa main ke situs semacam Fail Blog.

Untuk memudahkan pembaca, buku ini dibagi menjadi beberapa topik, dari dunia kerja, di luar kerja, hukum, olahraga, panggung, perang, politik, sampai cinta dan pernikahan. Judul cerita rata-rata diawali dengan The Worst, The Most Unsuccessful, atau The Least Successful. Kalaupun diawali dengan The Best, diikuti dengan kata Mistakes.

Misalnya saja The Least Successful Weather Report:

After severe flooding in Jeddah in January 1979, the Arab News gave the following bulletin:
'We regret we are unable to give you the weather. We rely on weather reports from the airports, which is closed because of the weather. Whether we are able to give you the weather tomorrow depends on the weather.'

Betsy Baker played a central role in the history of collecting. She was employed as a servant in the house of John Warburton (1682 - 1759) who has amassed a fine collection of the 58 first edition plays, including most of the works of Shakespeare.One day Warburton returned home to find 55 of them charred beyond legibility. Betsy had either burned them or used them as pie bottoms. The remaining three folios are now in the British Museum.The only comparable literary figure was the maid who in 1835 burned the manuscript of the first volume of Thomas Carlyle's ' The History of the French Revolution', thinking it was wastepaper.

Untuk menjadi anggotanya, kita harus benar-benar tidak jago atau tidak sukses dalam suatu hal, lebih parah lebih bagus. Seperti di AA, anggota harus menceritakan kegagalan-kegagalan epik yang pernah dialami, sehingga pantas diakui sebagai anggota.
